The roots of table tennis
There are several theories about the origin of table tennis, one of which says that the original form of the sport was invented by English tennis lovers who played indoors using a table on rainy days.
Racket
The racket is mainly made up of a wooden blade and a rubber cover. There are three different types of racket, each used for a distinct grip style: shakehand, penhold, and Chinese penhold. Every racket used in official tournaments in Japan is required to have the manufacturer name and the official mark of the Japan Table Tennis Association Approved (JTTAA) in a conspicuous location.
Ball
The ball must be 40 mm in diameter and weigh 2.7 grams, made of a celluloid or similar plastics material, and colored white or orange. Other types of ball may be used, such as the large ball that is 44 mm in diameter and weighing 2.2 to 2.4 grams and the “sound table tennis” ball that has metallic pellets in it.
Table
The table has a rectangular surface 2.74 meters long, 1.525 meters wide, and 0.76 meters high from the ground and is divided into two halves by a 15.25-cm-high net supported by the posts at both sides.
Game
Players standing at each end of the table hit the ball back and forth over the net. There are two categories of game: singles and doubles. In doubles, the players of each pair must alternate hitting the ball. The player first scoring 11 points wins the game. Matches are typically best of five or seven games. When both players score 10 points, the game will be won by the first player subsequently gaining a lead of two points.
